RLH Street & Inline hosted the first ever National Inline Hockey Open on June 20that the Ridge Road Rink in Germantown, MD. The tournament is an adult “open” tournament allowing any and all teams to enter, that are comprised of players ages 18+.
The tournament, much like the winter outdoor Pond Hockey tournaments, is meant to be outdoors as well as organized and competitive while allowing teams to create their own rosters, uniforms and self-police games.
Because of the outdoor nature of the tourney, you never know what Mother Nature might bring and this year she brought a lot of rain! Rules stipulate that play stops in the case of lightning but carries on in “dek” or “street” hockey fashion in sneakers in the case of rain.
In any case, temperatures were comfortable and play carried on. The 2 teams competing for the “Langway Cup” were H.C. red Line and the NIHO-Open Team. In the end H.C. RLH took the 3 game series with 2 victories in a row, but not without lead changes numerous times in both games.
We were glad that those who came out enjoyed it and hope that your team makes it out for the 2010 NIHO! A website and details will be forthcoming over the course of the fall and winter.
